Meet the Furbabies

Today Gus is over trying to make some friends over at Total Basset Case. Floyd (and Sarah) are super cute. Go over and say "hi" and  see Gus's pathetic attempt at online dating.

Since Gus is having his day over there, I thought I would formally introduce blogland to our other furbabies. I now have two cats. One has always been mine, and the other started off as mine and now he's back. Let's back up to my sophomore year of high school. My mom finally let me have a cat  (after a good 10 years of me asking for one.) My brother's cat had kittens and mom let me go over and choose one. I have really cute kitten pictures of him somewhere. I named him Kanobi and he was cute as can be. Two years later, I had to move off to college. Once I was finally in an apartment and could have a cat, I asked for mine back. Mom said that he was happy with her. So I adopted this little girl.
This is Allison. I got her when she was just 8 weeks old. She became extremely spoiled. And now here she is... at 7 1/2 years old. And fat.

After my mom passed away, Kanobi came back to live with us. He is adjusting as well as he can. Allison however, is not to keen on another feline living in the house.

He's part Siamese, 15 years old, and he is VERY talkative. He has already warmed up to Gus and he loves the Mister. He probably would tolerate Allison, if she would just let him out of his room. She will growl at him if her starts to go out. And she will go into his room and just stare at him. And eat his food. We've had him for about a month and a half, so I am hoping that it gets better soon.

Any ideas on how to make my cat stop being such a witch? Any pets of your own?

Weekend (un)adventures

Honestly, we've been having some pretty low key weekends around here. I spend most a completely acceptable amount of time in my jammies. (To be fair, sometimes I shower and then put on a clean set.) That's why I haven't been doing weekend recaps lately. I changed out of my jammies a couple of times this weekend, so I figure I should document it.

This weekend (well Thursday night) I...
played in my bunco group! It was our first get together, and we are planning on doing it the first Thursday of every month. I made an amazing fruit dip. Some of the ladies even thought the home ec teacher made it, which totally made my day.

I actually found this recipe on Pinterest while shopping for snacks for bunco night.
Mix on medium speed... 1/2 cup brown sugar and 1 8 ounce package of cream cheese until combined.
Add in... 1 cup sour cream and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Fold in... 1 cup (ish) Cool Whip
Let chill and serve with fruit slices. Or a spoon. It's that good.

This weekend I...
...tried to make this guy feel as comfortable as possible.

This is Kanobi, my mom's cat. I guess technically he was my cat first. I got him when I was a sophomore in high school, and when I moved away to college he had to stay behind. If you are doing the math right, you will notice that this old man is 15 years old. He actually got out of my mom's house the day she passed away, and it took my brother almost a month to get him back in the house. Last weekend the mister and I headed up to my mom's house and were finally able to catch him and bring him to our house. Currently he has his own room in the house and we are slowly getting the other animals use to him. My dog couldn't care less. My cat on the other hand...
This weekend I...
A felt tree for children to decorate again and again

...hung out with the BFF and started to make one of these felt Christmas trees for her daughter. She is 17 months old and the idea is that she will play with this tree instead of the big one. We just were cutting out ornaments and I don't have any pictures of what we made, but I will get some once it is all put up in their house.

How was your weekend? Have you ever played bunco?

...And a Prince in Nairobi is going to give me 3 Million dollars if I send him my SSN

Alternative Title: I think my cat's vet ripped me off.
Alternative Title #2: I would probably buy ocean front property in Arizona
Alternative Title #3: ...I'm a sucker

I am almost too embarrassed to admit this.

I bought a bottle of cat pheromones.

It is supposed to make the transition for my mom's cat to our home easier. And it is supposed to make it easier for my cat to adjust to another cat in the house.

I feel a little better because I just Googled "cat pheromone spray" and it has a ton of good reviews on Amazon and Petco, (and some not so good ones) but it's still such a dumb thing.

Have you ever tried this cat pheromone spray? Please tell me I'm not an idiot for buying it.

High Five, It's Friday

As you know I have been having a rough few weeks, but I thought I would look at those things that have made me smile this past week.
1
My leadership students got me these flowers when I came back to work last week. Yes, it was last week but they smell SO good. I kept them in my classroom because 8th grade boys do not smell good.

2
This. Is. Amazing.

I found this etsy shop while blog stalking here.
I think Allison would look smashing in a little bowler hat.

3
My big blog win from Angi. Yes, I already posted about it, but that Alaska mug was perfect for my Delux Kraft mac and cheese last night. And the head band is fantastic.

4
Dutch Bros. is an Oregon based coffee chain and they give away their stickers for free. I have never wanted one, but this one was way to cute to pass up. It's their breast cancer awareness sticker and I love it. I think it will go on my water bottle but I haven't decided yet.

And the big one... I was in a flash mob during an assembly at school yesterday. Well, I guess technically I organized, choreographed and then danced in a flash mob at school yesterday. I was so freaking exhausted after wards.
If I get a better video, I might post it later, but this is the first one that hit facebook.

Have you ever been in a flash mob? Ever wanted to be in one? Which hat should I buy for my cat?

Do cats get jealous?

Do cats get jealous? Because I think mine did. Yesterday I posted about the cute new dog bed I made for Gus. Allison, knew something was up with the fabric. The entire time I was making it she sat right next to me, looking at the soft, fluffy fleece. Then she watched as I put the final product in Gus's crate and he climbed in and laid down.

Then, Monday morning, I discovered that the little princess Allison, had POOPED on his new blanket inside Gus's crate! I have never even seen her go into Gus's crate, much less leave a little present behind. I think she was jealous that Gus got a new blankie and she didn't.

Do your pets get jealous? Am I the only one who thinks of their pets as little, furry people?

Gus and Allison

Blogland, I have two very important reasons for you to head out to your local animal shelters today! Please, meet Gus Dog and Allison Kitty.
Gus and Allison are both shelter pets, and they. are. awesome.
Let's start with Allison, shall we?

I adopted Allison 6+ years ago when she was just 8 weeks old. She has been the best kitty and companion I could have asked for. She is extremely feisty (still!) and will randomly just run around for no good reason. She is an indoor only cat, unless of course she has her leash on. As she is getting older she also enjoys cuddling on the couch and napping. She did just learn how to open the bedroom closet, so now to find away to keep that from happening! (She sheds. A lot.)

Blogland, meet Mister Gus Dog.
After the Mister and I bought our house, we started looking at shelters for a dog. This decision was completely mutual and I did not have to beg or bring it up 1000 times a day. (Is there a sarcasm font?) Our requirements for a dog was this: not a puppy, house trained, and MUST get along with cats. We also didn't really want a small dog, more of a medium sized one. We were hoping to get a dog at the beginning of summer so I could be home with him at first. We visited many dogs in 4 or 5 shelters before we met Gus. His name was McFly, and honestly, he didn't impress me much. He was super drooly and his white face just made him look old. We passed on him and put a deposit down on this younger golden retriever mix. In the end, that dog did not like cats, despite what her paperwork said. The shelter worker suggested we go back to McFly because he was so calm around cats. We took him outside, played a little fetch and decided we would be his forever family. That was 2 1/2 years ago.

Allison was given to the Humane Society as part of a litter of kittens. She and her sisters were fostered and then put up for adoption. When I met her, she was the last one left. Her paperwork even said "would be great if adopted with one of her sisters." Sad! I remember seeing her trying to climb up the side of her little kitty jail and I knew she had to come home with me. Gus had a little bit rougher of a story. He was a stray when he came to the Humane Society. After 2 months he was adopted, and then brought back. Sad! We met Gus about a month after that. He is pretty fearful of other dogs, fireworks, the dark etc. but he is also very loving and friendly with every person he meets.

Shelters everywhere are full of loving pets just looking for a forever family. If you are looking for a furry addition to your family, please consider going to a shelter instead of a breeder. Shelters have pets of all ages, shapes, colors and sizes. A lot of times they even have purebred dogs and puppies. If you are not able to adopt, please, please, please think about donating pet food, toys and beds. The economy is real rough right now, and our furry friends are suffering too. Many shelters have seen an increase in animals being surrendered and a decrease in donations.

And of course, there is one thing all responsible pet owners should do: have your pets spayed and neutered!

Allison Kitten is OKAY!!!

Spoiler Alert: The title gives away the ending of the story
I've had a pretty stressful week. The week (Sunday) started off great, in fact my facebook status was something about a great last day of summer. Then, around 7pm my Allison Kitten threw up. Gross, but not completely unusual. Then she did it again about an hour or so later. This time it was a lot of water. I was starting to get concerned, while the Mister was just grumbling about the stupid fat cat. Allison continued to throw up all night long. I barely got any sleep. The worst part of it all was I had to go back to work the next morning so I couldn't take her straight to the vet like I wanted to. Monday morning I did call the vet and make an appointment for that afternoon. I texted the Mister the time, and he texted back saying he would try to get off work early to come with me. I lost it with that.

He has never once offered to come with me to the vet for either furbaby. He still hasn't said this, but I know he wanted to be there for me in case she had to be put down :(

Anyway, that didn't happen. We actually spent two hours at the vet where they took her blood, gave her xrays etc. for them to tell me they didn't know why she was so sick, but they gave her fluids and an anti-nausea shot and a bottle of anti-biotics and some special canned food. Since Tuesday she has been eating her special diet and started playing with her toys again. I am so happy and thankful for that!
