A Book Confession

I have a confession.

I really like reading book series. Like a lot. I think this explains it.
My first thought after I finish an amazing book: "Well this sucks. What the hell am I supposed to do now?"
I mean, I just invested so much into these characters and into this world, I don't just want to walk away. Plus, if I start a series that has been around for awhile, I can binge and read them all. (I started the Stephanie Plum series last year and read all 18 in no time.) I have heard some people say that books in a series aren't as good as other books, but I always enjoy them.

My first trip to the library this summer was a couple weeks ago. I knew I wanted to try out some of the Amish "romance" books Michelle loves so much. I had asked her for a suggestion on where to get started and she pointed me to this series.

At first I was a little hesitant to dig in. I mean, it was in the "inspirational fiction" section of my library, and I had never even walked in that area. I am so glad I finally read it. And, it is the first book of  a series so I can continue to read on about the sisters and their lives. It did take a bit to get used to the style of writing (it jumps from the POV of each sister) and to get used to the dialogue. I am now starting the second book and it picks up right where the first left off.

Also while wandering in the library this title/cover art caught my eye (I admit, I judge books by their cover. Especially when I just start wandering through the fiction section without any thing in mind.)
Bestselling Sci-Fi/ Fantasy (2006) - Carpe Demon: Adventures of a Demon-Hunting Soccer Mom by Julie Kenner
Goodreads
I wasn't even in the "moonlight madness" section, and I still found a book on vampires and demons. And it happened to be the first of another series. This one is about a retired demon hunter who now lives in the 'burbs and hasn't told her husband or teenage daughter about her previous profession. (Think if Buffy grew up and tried to hide her past.) This was a quick, fun read. Perfect for summer time. I also read the second in the series already.

Other series that I have read and really enjoy: The Southern Vampire Mysteries by Charlaine Harris (the True Blood Books), the Alex Cross series by James Patterson, the Betsy Taylor series (Mary Janice Davidson) and the Harper Connely series (also by Charlaine Harris).

What are some of your favorite books? Do you read series?

I really need to find some good books to read. I finished the Hunger Games series a while ago and haven't read anything since.

I really enjoy books in a series, too. There's just something fun about sticking with characters for a long journey. :) Beverly Lewis' books are so good. I used to read them all the time, and I have a ton. She does do a lot of series books, and I think that it's interesting to read books from the perspective of the Amish culture.

I'm reading The Giver right now. I read it in 7th grade, and I don't remember it. I decided to read it again. Turns out, it is the first in a series. So I was lucky to get all 3 books from Scholastic with my teacher Bonus Points. It's also one of the books I have available to use as a 6th grade reading teacher, so I'm hoping to come up with a great unit to go along with it! :)

I have such a love hate with Stephanie Plum. So formula driven, but funny!

I know exactly what you mean! The worst is when you get really into a book and no one else understands your obsession! I actually have a friend who cannot bring herself to finish a series because she doesn't want them to end.

Some of my faves right now are Divergent (and Insurgent) by Veronica Roth and the Matched series by Ally Condie!

Oh I'm with you, I love reading series(es?)! I'm pretty much a sucker for the 'inspirational romance' category, too. My favorite series I've read lately is the O'Malley series (I think there's 6 or 7) by Dee Henderson. Formulaic but fabulous, every one!! :)

I have a terrible, terrible habit of starting books and then not finishing them. Right now I'm 2/3rds of the way through Jim Gaffigan's book, about 4 chapters into The Thorn Birds, and I just started reading a book about owning a freelance graphic design business. BAD habit. Those Amish books look good.............

YES!! I love this! I'm so glad you like it. Isn't it good?! I forgot to warn you about the dutch, but you get used to it and start learning some of the words.

I love series, or mostly sticking to all the books with a particular character or author. Series aren't so risky. Once you've read the first one, you know you want to read the rest, rather than trying out a different author, different characters every time. Anne of Green Gables, the Emily books (also by Montgomery) are some of my favorites. And I also have all 50 plus Hercule Poirot books...not really a series but all the same main character...

I'm convinced I don't read as much as I could/should because I hate falling into that depression after a good book.
